- What is your current position?
I am a Professor in the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Tech. I have been on the faculty here since 2003, after completing my PhD at Caltech. Another role I hold is the ADVANCE Professor for the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech, which is a role for faculty advocacy including transparency and wellbeing. I also hold a joint appointment at Savannah River National Lab.
- What are your professional interests?
My research program is based in process control, with applications centering on the kinetics of molecular organization. We utilize computational and experimental methods in applications including pharmaceutical crystallization, polymer film deposition, and nuclear separations. I particularly enjoy working with graduate students and advise a group of 11 graduate students, as well as one postdoc and four undergraduate students. I enjoy teaching process control and will be teaching capstone process design in the spring for the first time.
- Why did you become a CACHE trustee?
At the time I was collaborating with artists on communicating concepts in origins of life chemistry to high school students (see https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.jchemed.6b00518). I enjoyed engaging with students in new ways, and CACHE seemed like a good way to do that.
- How has CACHE helped you and the ChemE community?
I had already been making short screencasts for my process control class, but was able to improve them and expand their reach through my CACHE collaboration with LearnChemE. I also enjoy CACHE conferences like CPC and FOPAM and am happy to help them to continue to thrive and evolve.
